Tips For Container Gardening

Container gardening not only serves as a fun hobby, but it can also be very rewarding. Millions of individuals around the world are taking advantage of its benefits. It is relaxing, enjoyable, and you have that sense of pride and accomplishment, knowing that you have grown your own garden from scratch. Because of climate change, many people are opting for container gardening to grow their own fresh produce. This can seem like a daunting task to many people at first, but starting your garden is both inexpensive and easy, if you follow a few basic tips.

The first thing you will want to do with container gardening is decide what plant you want to grow. Once you have done this you can take a trip to the nursery and get your container and gardening supplies. Get three plastic pots and ensure that there are drainage holes at the bottom. You may also want to put a tray underneath it to catch the excess water and soil. To begin, you will need your seeds, organic compost, peat moss, a small trowel, and a clean spray bottle or watering can. Make sure that you have a windowsill that receives a lot of sunlight, but if you do not you can get a halogen or florescent light. All this should cost you $20, and the light will cost around $15.

The next thing you want to do with container gardening is prepare the soil. You will need to mix together 5 parts of compost with 1 part of peat moss. Using this mixture, fill each of the three containers up until around half an inch from their tops. When you have done this, plant the seeds. In the centre of each pot, use your finger to create a hole that is around one inch deep. Put 3-4 seeds in each hole, cover with soil and add some water. Then place it on the windowsill or beneath the fluorescent light.

Container gardening requires you to regularly water and maintain your plants. If the soil is dry to the touch, add a little bit of water. Every few weeks, make sure that you pinch off each stem’s top, and remove flower stalks when you notice them. This is to ensure that they grow adequately.

Container gardening can be fun, and does not have to be a mammoth task. By following a few steps you can have the garden you have always wanted.
