The fastest internet providers in the US

Google Fibre and Verizon Fios have the fastest average internet speeds in the US. These two fibre carriers provide fast download, upload, and ping rates. Are you looking for the best Windstream internet service provider for rural area.

Avg. Speeds on Metro Net, Cox, and Xfinity MetroNet, like Google Fiber and Verizon, offers fiber internet with equal upload and download speeds. However, Cox and Xfinity provide slower upload than download speeds—17.6 Mbps and 13.9 Mbps, respectively.

From July 1, 2020, to July 1, 2021, our internet speed test tool collected data from 3.6 million internet users across the US. Because most of our internet activity includes downloading data, we base our provider comparisons on download speed.

Internet Speed

Residential internet speeds typically surpass 1,000 Mbps—faster than Xfinity and Google Fibre, yet expensive and restricted availability. A few companies (EPB Fiber Optics in Chattanooga, TN) provide speeds up to 10,000 Mbps. But such are rare and perhaps excessive. Almost every ISP currently offers gigabit internet. So we used the FCC’s Ninth Measuring Broadband America report to find the fastest internet service providers in the US. The survey includes providers who exceeded actual-to-advertised speeds for most users (since paying for top rates is pointless if you continuously get less than you pay for).

Who is the fastest provider?

EarthLink has the happiest clients when it comes to internet speed. We recently polled thousands of internet users to gauge their happiness with the significant US ISPs.EarthLink scored 4.1 out of 5 in our July 2021 poll on internet speed. Cox, AT&T, Suddenlink, Mediacom, RCN, and Sparklight all tied for third place with a score of 3.8.

EarthLink provides both fiber and DSL. DSL internet max out at roughly 100 Mbps. Therefore, DSL providers won’t be the fastest in our speed tests. EarthLink may still offer reliable DSL service in addition to fast fiber access.

Which internet providers are the fastest?

Unsurprisingly, Google Fiber has the fastest fiber internet. It is the nation’s fastest internet provider. Because fiber internet provides symmetrical upload and download speeds, it also has excellent upload speeds. Cox is the quickest cable. Other cable providers frequently offer gigabit speeds. We’re also impressed by Starry Internet, a tiny but growing 5G-based fixed-wireless operator. Expect additional 5G fixed-wireless alternatives. CenturyLink’s DSL speeds are impressive but bear in mind that CenturyLink also offers fiber internet. Which is often faster than DSL.

What is the fastest internet?

Fibre-optic internet is the quickest. In our US speed tests, fiber internet providers were placed first. A good performance for cable internet service providers in the US. Both fiber and cable internet may reach (and sometimes exceed) 1,000 Mbps (1 Gbps).

There are other forms of internet connections besides cable and fiber, each with varying effects on speed:

Fibre internet presently has the fastest speeds accessible, up to 10,000 Mbps, in some regions. It uses bundled fiber-optic glass threads to send light messages over vast distances. Fibre doesn’t have the speed concerns that previous internet connections do. Cable internet employs underground copper coaxial cables to transmit data. While cable can reach gigabit internet speeds, its bandwidth is restricted. Too many internet users in one region at the same time might cause network congestion.

DSL is short for the digital subscriber line. It delivers internet over phone lines, offering substantially faster speeds than dial-up. DSL is less stable than cable or fiber since it uses older phone infrastructure. Its highest speed is 100 Mbps. Satellite internet employs wireless signals to connect your home to a satellite circling the planet. However, because data must travel thousands of miles to reach this technology, it has a significantly larger latency than other types of internet. Weather can potentially disrupt satellite communications.

Satellite internet operates similarly, but the halfway is radio tower transmitters instead of satellites. Fixed wireless requires line-of-sight to send signals. Currently, most fixed-wireless carriers offer speeds of less than 100 Mbps. But, with the advent of 5G, the technology may be able to achieve fiber-like speeds. Cellular connections connect your mobile devices to the internet via cell towers. Unlike other forms of the internet, it is not a one-to-one connection. Every mobile device linked to a cell tower uses the same bandwidth, affecting speeds.

How we ranked the US’s fastest ISPs

Between July 1, 2020, and July 1, 2021, we collected data from over 3.6 million individuals who used our speed test tool. We found the US internet providers with the fastest average upload, download, and ping rates. We ranked internet providers based on download speed because that’s what people need. It’s also the central speed used by internet companies to advertise their service.

The faster the download and upload, the better. Low latency means quicker response times and a smoother connection. Latency is the time it takes for a signal to travel from a device to a network. Delay is measured in milliseconds, and higher latency causes choppy video and audio in streaming and online gaming.
