What is a finned tube heat exchanger?

A finned tube heat exchanger is a type of heat exchanger made from an assembly of tubes with fins attached to their external surfaces.

The fins provide increased surface area for the same amount of tubing, which allows for greater heat transfer between two media.

In addition, the fins create turbulence in the fluid passing over them.

This adds additional surface area that aids in transferring more heat.

How does it work 

A finned tube heat exchanger operates on the same principle as any other heat exchanger.

Two fluids are passed through the unit with one on the inside of the tubes and one on the outside of the tubes.

Heat is exchanged between these two fluids as they pass by each other in very close proximity to each other either through conduction or convection.

In a finned tube heat exchanger, the design of the unit produces turbulence in both fluid streams.

Which increases contact between them and thus improves heat transfer through conduction.

Uses of the finned tube heat exchanger

  • Liquid cooling of electronic components:

The high heat capacity and low cost associated with pure water make it a good candidate for use as a coolant in the electronics industry.

  • Waste heat recovery:

Many industries, especially those that generate steam, can reduce energy costs by using the exhaust from their boiler systems to pre-heat incoming makeup water.

  • Solar water heating:

The use of solar collectors is an excellent way to harness the power that surrounds us.

They can be used in many different ways, such as transferring heat from finned tube heat exchangers into traditional storage devices like tanks and hot water boilers!

Advantages and disadvantages of this type of heat exchanger

A finned tube exchanger is also more efficient when it comes to energy consumption.

Because its design means that less overall pressure drop takes place over the tubes when fluids are forced through them. 

On the other hand, some disadvantages exist in regards to this type of heat exchanger.
